Presentation of the project

Streetchildren in Senegal
at the Passerelle

On March 29, all the members of the project came together for a conference at the Passerelle on the problem of talibe children in Senegal, and a presentation of their objectives and modes of action. The Passerelle was holding a photography exhibit on the subject since Monday, March 14.

John and Nelline presented the GYAN association and its many projects.

With the help of Juan, they then spoke more specifically about the project of aid to Senegalese children, insisting on different modes of action: sponsoring a project to send mosquito nets, donating books, sending volunteers to Senegal, etc.

Ousmane N'Diaye, a Senegalese student in France stepped in to explain the problem of talibe children and their overwhelming presence in Senegalese society.

Ousmane gave his own point of view, speaking of his belief in human rights and human dignity.

Following Ousmane's discours, Aurélie, having just returned from Senegal, talked about her impressions and showed the reality of the problem of talibe children.

She then recounted certain discussions on the subject that she had with Senegalese students, heads of associations, taxi drivers...

She also talked about the work of G1000, a local NGO working with GYAN.

Photos of Senegalese children were shown throughout Aurélie's discussion.

The conference ended with a question-answer session between the speakers and audience.

The debat centered around one major question: How can we approach the problem of talibe children without attacking Senegalese culture and traditions?
