Photo Exhibit - Streetchildren in Senegal

"The Shocking World of Dakar's Streetchildren"

28th of February - 4 March, 2005

La Maision des Initiatives Etudiantes

50 rue des Tournelles (Métro : Bastille)

The exhibit was launched with a private viewing and cocktail on the 28th of March.

Ousmane Ndiaye, a native of Senegal and a student in sociology at the Sorbonne, intervened in presenting the cultural context of the problem.

Ousmane took questions from the audience. Propositions were made to enhance the educational opportunities of the children.

Osmane concluded the event by stating that the phenomenon of talibés should not be accepted as a cultural practice, but rather, as an affront to human dignity and the rights of the child.

He emphasized the necessity of ameliorating the conditions of these children for any long term effort in development in Senegal.
